Pre-service science teachers’ mental images towards biology concept (Metaphor analysis sample)

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine pre-service science teachers' perceptions on biology through metaphors. These pre-service science teachers are 3rd and 4th grade students who have enrolled for General Biology 1 and General Biology 2 courses. For that purpose, the working group of the study consists of 220 students studying in the 3rd and 4th grades at the department of Science Education in Gazi University Faculty of Gazi Education and Artvin Çoruh University Faculty of Education during the spring semester of 2012-13 academic year. Qualitative research method is used in this research. Also, a systematic metaphor analysis techniques which is one of the data analysis of qualitative researches is used. .The participants are asked to complete the sentence "If biology were (fruit, sport, car, game, color and season), it would be ................ Because ....................." and to write three words that come to their mind first when biology mentioned. The content analysis is used for the metaphors developed by pre-service science teachers. According to the findings, pre-service science teachers who have participated in the study develop 130 metaphors about biology. These, 130 metaphors are analyzed in 19 different categories and results are interpreted. Consequently, it is determined that the words “living, world, genetic” come to the preservice teachers’ minds at first when they think about biology and they have positive perceptions on biology. As a result of findings, recommendations are provided scope of this research.

Bu çalışmanın amacı genel biyoloji 1 ve genel biyoloji 2 derslerini alan 3. ve 4. sınıfta öğrenim gören fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarının biyolojiye ilişkin algılarını metaforlar yolu ile belirlemektir. Bu amaç doğrultusunda araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 2012-2013 akademik yılı bahar döneminde Gazi Üniversitesi Gazi Eğitim Fakültesi ve Artvin Çoruh Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi Fen Bilgisi Öğretmenliği programına kayıtlı toplam 220 katılımcı oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemi kullanılmış olup, nitel çalışmalara yönelik veri analizlerinden sistematik metafor analizi tekniği benimsenmiştir. Katılımcılardan “Eğer biyoloji bir (meyve, spor, araç, oyun, renk ve mevsim) olsaydı, ……… olurdu. Çünkü ………” cümlesini tamamlamaları ile biyoloji denilince katılımcıların akıllarına gelen ilk üç kelimeyi yazmaları istenmiştir. Bu kapsamda, öğretmen adaylarının geliştirdikleri metaforlara ilişkin içerik analizi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bulgulara göre araştırmaya katılan fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarının biyolojiye ilişkin toplam 130 metafor geliştirdikleri görülmüştür. Bu metaforlar 19 farklı kategoride değerlendirilerek, sonuçlar yorumlanmıştır. Sonuç olarak biyoloji denilince akıllarına gelen ilk üç kelimenin ağırlıklı olarak canlı, dünya ve genetik olduğu ve genel olarak öğretmen adaylarının biyolojiye yönelik olumlu algılara sahip olduğu belirlenmiş ve çalışma kapsamında önerilerde bulunulmuştur.
