Nazarın sözlük anlamı bakma, bakış, göz atma, göz değmesi, göze gelme, fikir, düşünce, dikkat ve övgüdür. Nazar canlı varlıklarda veya objelerde bulunan pek çok güzel ve hoş haller karşısında dilimizde, gözümüzde, kalbimizde oluşan kıskançlık, gıpta, haset gibi duygular nedeniyle karşımızda bulunan nesnede bazı rahatsızlık veren ve olumsuz hallerin oluşmasına sebep olan negatif bir akımdır. Temelleri Neolitik Çağa kadar inen nazar bir halk inancıdır. Mezopotamya'da Sümer, Babil, batıda Eski Yunan ve Roma, doğuda Pers ve Hint, güneyde Mısır ve birçok Avrupa kavimlerini içine alan devasa bir coğrafya üzerinde yaygın olan nazar inancının başlangıç tarihi net olarak bilinmemekle birlikte M.Ö 4000 yılına kadar gittiği kabul edilmektedir. Bölgede konuya ilişkin çok az sayıda çalışma yapılmış olması nedeniyle bu çalışmada Nevşehir'in bir ilçesi olan Ürgüp'te nazar inancı ve uygulamalarının değerlendirmesi yapılmıştır. Mülakat tekniklerine dayalı bir soru listesi oluşturulmuş ve yöredeki nazar inancı, nazardan korunma yolları ve uygulamaları araştırılmıştır.Yapılan mülakat çalışmaları bölgede yaşayan yerli halkın katılımıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Betimsel analiz yöntemiyle elde edilen bulguların çözümlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Yapılan araştırmalar sonucunda Ürgüp yöresinde yaşayan halkın %84'nün nazara inandığı %16'sının ise nazara inanmadığı tespit edilmiştir. İnananların çoğunluğunun kadınlardan oluştuğu ve nazar inancı ve uygulamalarının kadınlarda daha etkin olduğu belirlenirken, erkeklerin nazar ile ilgili düşüncelerinin daha yüzeysel olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Araştırma yapılan Ürgüp yöresinde yaşı 50 ve üstü olanların nazar inancının gençlere göre daha fazla olduğu ve nazardan korunmak için geçmişten günümüze gelen birçok uygulama yönteminin olduğundan bahsedilmiştir.Nazarın ebeveynlerden geçen bir kültür olduğu ve kişilerin büyüklerinden gördüğü bu kültürü hâlâ devam ettirdikleri gözlemlenmiştir. Nazara karşı yapılan uygulamalardan bazılarının nazar boncuğu takmak, at nalı asmak, kurşun dökmek, mum dökmek, üzerinde şep veya çörek otu taşımak, üzerlik bulundurmak veya tütsü yakmak olduğu ve bunların günümüzde de hâlâ yöre halkının hayatının bir parçası olduğu tespit edilmiştir.
The dictionary meaning of evil eye is looking, gazing, peeking, intimidation, gazing, idea, thought, attention and praise. Evil eye is a negative current that occurs in our tongue, eyes, and hearts in the face of many beautiful and pleasant situations in living beings or objects, causing some discomfort and negative situations in the object in front of us due to emotions such as jealousy, envy, envy. Evil eye is a folk belief that dates back to the Neolithic age. Although the beginning date of the evil eye belief, which is widespread in Mesopotamia over a huge geography that includes Sumerian, Babylonian, Ancient Greek and Roman in the west, Persian and Indian in the east, Egypt and many European tribes in the south, is not known clearly, it is accepted that it goes back to 4000 BC. Since there are very few studies on the subject in the region, in this study, the evil eye belief and practices in Ürgüp, a district of Nevşehir, were evaluated. A list of questions based on interview techniques was created and the evil eye belief in the region, ways of protection from the evil eye and its practices were investigated. The interviews were carried out between 13-20 June 2022 with the participation of the local people living in the region. It is aimed to analyze the findings obtained by the descriptive analysis method. As a result of the researches, it has been determined that 84% of the people living in Ürgüp believe in the evil eye and 16% do not believe in the evil eye. While it was determined that the majority of the believers were women and that the evil eye belief and practices were more effective in women, it was determined that men's thoughts about the evil eye were more superficial. It has been mentioned that in the Ürgüp region where the research was conducted, the evil eye belief of those aged 50 and over is higher than the young ones, and that there are many application methods from the past to the present to protect them from the evil eye. It has been observed that the evil eye is a culture passed from parents and people still maintain this culture that they see from their elders. It has been determined that some of the practices against the evil eye are burning incense, hanging a horseshoe, pouring lead, pouring candles, carrying shep or black cumin on it, having or burning peony and these are still a part of the life of the local people today.
