Magee (1973) tarafından literatüre dâhil edilmesinden bu yana çok sayıda çalışma, J-Eğrisi hipotezinin geçerliliğini farklı ülkeler için farklı yöntemler kullanarak test etmiştir. Toplulaştırılmış veriler ve ikili ticaret verileri kullanılarak yapılan bu çalışmaların sonuçları ülke grubu ve analiz tekniğine göre farklılık göstermektedir. Bu literatürün aksine, J-Eğrisi hipotezinin geçerliliğini Türkiye için araştıran çalışmaların büyük bir çoğunluğu ise hipotezin geçerli olmadığı sonucuna ulaşmaktadır. Bu noktalardan hareketle mevcut çalışma, Türkiye'nin en önemli ticaret partneri olan Avro Bölgesi ile ikili ticareti göz önüne alarak, 2002-2019 döneminde J-Eğrisi hipotezinin geçerliliğini incelemektedir. Çeyreklik veriler kullanılarak kurulan model, Havuzlanmış Ortalama Grup (PMG) ve Dinamik Ortak İlişkili Etkiler (DCCE) tahmincileri kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. PMG tahmincisinden elde edilen bulgular, Türkiye ve Avro Bölgesi arasındaki ikili ticarette J-Eğrisi hipotezinin geçerli olduğunu göstermektedir. DCCE tahmincisinden elde edilen sonuçlar ise Türkiye ve Avro Bölgesi arasındaki ikili ticarette J-Eğrisi hipotezinin geçerli olmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular, hipotezin geçerliliğinin sınanmasında kullanılan ampirik yöntemin önemine vurgu yapmaktadır.
A great number of studies have investigated the validity of the J-Curve hypothesis for various countries using different methodologies since it was introduced by Magee (1973). The results of these studies depending on either aggregate or bilateral trade data vary across countries as well as empirical approaches. Unlike this literature, a plethora of studies examining the validity of the J-Curve hypothesis in Turkey have found no evidence on the validity of the hypothesis. Given these points, the aim of this study is to investigate the validity of the J-Curve hypothesis considering the bilateral trade between Turkey and her major trading partner, Eurozone, over the period 2002-2019. Using quarterly data, the empirical model has been estimated using the Pooled Mean Group (PMG) estimator and the Dynamic Common Correlated Effects (DCCE) estimator. Findings obtained from the PMG estimator indicate the validity of the J-Curve hypothesis given the bilateral trade between Turkey and Eurozone. Results from the DCCE estimator, however, provide no evidence on the validity of the hypothesis. Overall, empirical results emphasize the importance of the empirical approach in testing the validity of the J-Curve hypothesis.
