Osmanlı basın hayatının ilk dönemlerinde yer alan vilayet gazeteleri, yerel gazeteciliğin temellerini oluşturur. 7 Kasım 1864'te çıkarılan Vilayet Tüzüğü ile Osmanlı Devleti'nde vilayet sistemine geçildi. Bu yasal düzenleme, her vilayette bir basımevi kurulması ve tüm vilayetlerde birer gazete çıkarılması yönünde bir başlangıç teşkil etti. Osmanlı Devleti'nde çıkarılan bu ilk vilayet gazetelerinin genel yapısı ise devleti güçlendirmeye yönelikti. Adana Basın hayatı, Adana Vilayetinin resmi ve ilk gazetesi niteliğinde olan Seyhan gazetesi ile başladı. Ayrıca ilk sayısı 5 Mart 1873'te yayımlanan Seyhan gazetesi, İkinci Meşrutiyet'in ilanına (23 Temmuz 1908) kadar geçen 35 yıllık süre içinde Adana'da yayım yapan tek gazetedir. Seyhan gazetesinden sonra Milli Mücadele yıllarına kadar çıkarılan birçok gazete kısa ömürlü olmuştur. Adana, 1909'dan Adana'nın kurtuluş tarihi 5 Ocak 1922'ye kadar askeri ve siyasi bakımdan birçok önemli olayın içerisinde yer aldı. Özellikle Mustafa Kemal Paşa'nın öncülük ettiği Milli Mücadele Dönemi'nde Adana basını, Cumhuriyet'in ilanıyla birlikte hem sayısal hem de içerik anlamında artış gösterdi ve Adana basınında önemli yazarlar yer aldı böylece ilke ve inkılâpların topluma doğru şekilde aktarılmasında basın ön plana çıktı. 1938 yılında Atatürk vefat etti ve İsmet İnönü cumhurbaşkanı seçildi. Bu dönemde dünya genelinde totaliter rejimlerin ortaya çıkması ve Avrupa'daki gelişmeler doğrultusunda basın alanının tümünde olduğu gibi Adana basınında da yönetimin hâkim olduğu bir basın anlayışı oluşturuldu. II. Dünya Savaşı sonrası dünyada gelişen olaylar, Türkiye'de demokratikleşme ve çok partili siyasal yaşama geçilmesine neden oldu. Çok Partili hayata geçilmesiyle basın alanında bazı gelişmeler meydana geldi ve özgürlük ortamı sağlanarak seçimler ve parti faaliyetleri doğrultusunda siyaset ile iç içe bir yayın anlayışı ortaya çıktı. 7 Ocak 1946'da Demokrat Parti (DP) kuruldu. 1946'dan 1950'ye kadar geçen dönemde birçok anlamda yeni bir sürece girildi ve DP'nin iktidara gelmesinde basının büyük ölçüde katkıları oldu. 1960'tan 2000'li yıllara kadar geçen süre içerisinde basın alanında birçok yenilik meydana geldi ve basına devlet hizmetlerinden faydalanma imkânı verildi yine bu süreçte günlük gazeteler gelişim gösterdi, yeni baskı teknikleri kullanılmaya başladı, gazetecilerin eğitim seviyelerinde artış oldu ve eğitim kurumlarında gazetecilik bölümleri açıldı. Daha sonra ise teknolojinin gelişmesi ve teknolojik aletlerin toplum yaşamına katılması basın alanını doğrudan etkilediği gibi gazetelerin yerini zamanla televizyon ve internet yayıncılığı almaya başladı. The provincial newspapers, which took place in the early periods of the Ottoman press, form the basis of local journalism. On 7 November 1864, the provincial system was introduced in the Ottoman Empire. This regulation was the beginning of the establishment of a printing house in each province and the publication of a newspaper in all provinces. The general structure of these first provincial newspapers published in the Ottoman Empire was aimed at strengthening the state. Adana Press life began with Seyhan newspaper, the official and first newspaper of the Adana Province. In addition, the first issue of Seyhan which was published on March 5, 1873, is the only newspaper published in Adana during the 35-year period until the announcement of the Second Constitutional Monarchy (23 July 1908). Many newspapers published after the Seyhan newspaper until the years of the National Struggle were short-lived. Adana was involved in many important military and political events from 1909 until the liberation of Adana on 5 January 1922. Especially during the National Struggle period led by Mustafa Kemal Pasha, the Adana press increased in terms of both numerical and content with the proclamation of the Republic and important writers took part in the Adana press so that the press came to the forefront in the correct transfer of principles and revolutions to the society. Atatürk passed away in 1938 and İsmet İnönü was elected as the President. The emergence of totalitarian regimes around the world in this period and In line with the developments in Europe, as in all of the press area, a press approach which was dominated by the administration was established in the Adana press. The events in the world after World War II, has caused democratization and the introduction of multi-party political life in Turkey. With the introduction of the multi-party system, some developments took place in the field of the press and an environment of freedom was created in line with the elections and party activities. On January 7, 1946, the Democratic Party (DP) was founded. During the period from 1946 to 1950, a new process was initiated in many ways and the press contributed greatly to the DP's coming to power. From the 1960s to the 2000s, many innovations took place in the field of the press and the press was given the opportunity to benefit from state services. In this process, daily newspapers developed, new printing techniques were used, the level of education of journalists increased and journalism departments were opened in educational institutions. Later, as the development of technology and the participation of technological tools in the society affected the press area directly, newspapers and television broadcasting began to take its place over time.
