On yedinci yüzyılda yaşayan Mehmed Efendi, Van’da doğduğu için “Vanî” lakabı ile anılmıştır. Yaşadığı dönemde, iki Osmanlı padişahı yönetimde bulunmuştur. İlim öğrenmek için Azerbaycan dâhil birçok yer gezmiştir. Öğrenimini tamamladıktan sonra Erzurum’da görev yapmış, daha sonra dönemin sadrazamının dikkatini çekmiş, sadrazamın daveti üzerine Osmanlı Devleti’nin başkenti İstanbul’a gitmiştir. İstanbul’da dönemin padişahının sohbetlerinde bulunmuş ve ilim meclislerinin kendisine danışılan önemli şahsiyetlerinden biri olmuştur. Vanî Mehmed Efendi İstanbul’a geldikten sonra çeşitli görevlerde bulunmuştur. Viyana kuşatmasından sonra hakkında olumsuz bir atmosfer oluşmuş, bu nedenle ömrünün son günlerini Bursa’da geçirmiş ve burada vefat etmiştir. Bilgisi ve hitabeti ile ön plana çıkmış, çeşitli vaaz ve nasihatlerde bulunmuştur. Zühd ve takva sahibidir. Vaazları, dinleyiciler üzerinde derin etkiler bırakmıştır. Vanî Mehmed Efendi, Osmanlı Devleti aleyhinde çalışmalarda bulunan meşhur dönme Sabatay Sevi’nin yargılandığı mahkemede divan üyesi olarak bulunmuştur. Onu ön plana çıkaran ise Arâisu’l-Kur’an adını taşıyan tefsir çalışmasıdır. O, tefsirde görüşlerini Türkçü bir bakışla yorumlar. Tevbe Suresi’nin 39. Ayetindeki Tebük Seferi’ne katılmakta isteksiz davranan Arapları kınamış, “…yerine başka bir millet bir getirir” ifadesinde yer alan milletin Türkler olduğunu ileri sürmüştür. Kur’an-ı Kerim’de adı geçen Zülkarneyn’in Oğuz Kağan olduğunu görüşündedir. Vanî Mehmed Efendi, Kur’an’da bozgunculuk yapan millet olarak nitelenen Ye’cüc ve Me’cüc’ün Türkler olduğunu görüşünü savunur. O, bazı kahvehanelerin kapanmasına, içkinin yasaklanmasına, bazı tekkelerin yıkılmasına neden olmuş, birtakım hatırı sayılır kişilerin sürgüne gönderilmesine sebep olmuştur. Vanî Mehmed Efendi, bazı Kur’an ayetlerinin yorumlanmasında alışılagelmişin dışına çıkarak birçok müfessirden farklı ve ilginç yorumlar getirmiştir. Vanî Mehmed Efendi Hz. Peygamber’in Türkler hakkında bazı hadisleri olduğunu ileri sürmüştür. Onun eğitim ve tarih anlayışı diğer müfessirlerden farklıdır. Amacımız; Vanî Mehmed Efendi’nin Kur’an ayetlerine getirdiği yorumlardan onun tarih anlayışını ortaya koymaktır. Çünkü o diğer müfessirlerden daha farklı bir tarih anlayışına sahiptir. Diğer müfessirler tarihle ilgili ayetlere getirdikleri yorumlarda genel bir tarih çerçevesi çizerken o, özel bir tarih çerçevesi çizmiştir.
Mehmed Efendi, who lived in the seventeenth century, was nicknamed “Vanî” because he was born in Van.
During his lifetime, two Ottoman sultans had ruled the empire. He traveled to many places, including Azerbaijan, to
learn science. After completing his education, he worked in Erzurum and upon attracting the attention of the grand
vizier of the period, he went to Istanbul, the capital city of the Ottoman Empire, with the invitation of the grand vizier.
He attended the conversations of the sultan of the time in Istanbul and became one of the important figures of the
scientific assemblies. Vanî Mehmed Efendi had been in various positions in the capital city. After the siege of Vienna,
a negative atmosphere took place about him. For that reason he spent the last days of his life in Bursa and passed away
here. His knowledge and rhetoric came to the fore and he gave various sermons and advices. He was a person who
had asceticism and piety, and his sermons had a profound effect on the audience. Vanî Mehmed Efendi was present
as a member of the council in the court where the famous renegade Sabatay Sevi, who worked against the Ottoman
Empire, was judged. What makes him stand out is his exegesis work named Arâisu'l-Qur'an. In that commentary, he
interprets his views with a Turkist perspective. He condemns the Arabs who were reluctant to participate in the Tabuk
Campaign which is mentioned in Surah at-Tawba 39th verse and claims that the nation in the statement “If you do not
go forth....bring in your place a people other than you” is the Turks. He is of the opinion that Dhu al-Qarnayn,
mentioned in the Quran, is Oghuz Khagan. He also defends the idea that Gog and Magog, which are described in the
Quran as the nations that corrupt everything, are Turks. He caused some coffee houses to be closed, alcohol being
banned, and some dervish lodges to be demolished, it caused a number of considerable people to be deported. Vanî
Mehmed Efendi brought out different and interesting interpretations by coming out of the usual lines in the
interpretation of some Qur'anic verses unlike many commentators. He claimed that the Prophet had some hadiths
about Turks. His understanding of education and history is different from other commentators. In this article, our aim
is revealing his understanding of history through his interpretation of the Qur’anic verses, because his understanding
