Giriş ve Amaç: Çocukluk çağında prevalansı giderek artan ve ileri yaşlarda da devam eden obezite; morbidite ve mortaliteyi önemli ölçüde etkileyen bir sağlık sorunudur. Bu sorunun erken dönemde tespit edilmesi önlem alınması açısından oldukça önemlidir. Araştırma, ortaokul öğrencilerinde obezite prevalansı ve obeziteyi etkileyen risk faktörlerinin belirlenmesi amacıyla tanımlayıcı olarak yapılmıştır. Yöntem: Araştırmanın örneklemini, Kırşehir il merkezindeki 18 ortaokulun 5, 6 ve 7. sınıflarında öğrenim gören 500 öğrenci ve ebeveyni oluşturmuştur. Etik kurul, kurum, ebeveyn ve öğrenci onamı alınan araştırmada, veriler Anket Formu ile toplanmıştır. Anket formu uygulamasından sonra, öğrencilerin vücut ağırlığı, boy uzunluğu ve bel çevresi ölçülmüş, Beden Kütle İndeksi hesaplanmıştır. Verilerin değerlendirilmesi, IBM SPSS Statistics 15.0 (IBM SPSS Inc, Chicago, ILL, USA) paket programı ile tanımlayıcı istatistikler, Kappa ve Ki-Kare testi kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Bulgular: Araştırmada, öğrencilerin %14.4'ünde obezite, %11.6'sında fazla kilo, %35.2'sinde ise abdominal obezite tespit edilmiştir. Kız öğrencilerde, doğumdan sonra anne sütü hiç almayanlarda obezitenin daha yüksek oranda görüldüğü belirlenmiştir ancak gruplar arası fark istatistiksel olarak önemli değildir (p>0.05). Öğrencilerin beslenme alışkanlıkları, ekran karşısında geçirdikleri süre ve spor yapma durumlarına ilişkin öğrenciler ve ebeveynlerinin verdiği yanıtlar arasında orta ve iyi derecede uyumluluk olduğu saptanmıştır (p<0.01). Anne ve babası obez olan, sıklıkla öğün atlayan, günde 1-2 öğün beslenen ve öğle yemeği yemeyen öğrencilerde daha yüksek oranda obezite görülmüş ve gruplar arası fark istatistiksel olarak önemli bulunmuştur (p<0.05). Sonuç ve Öneriler: Bu sonuçlar doğrultusunda, çocukluk çağı obezitesinin erken tespit edilmesi ve önlenmesi için düzenli aralıklarla öğrencilerin boy kilo takibinin değerlendirilmesi, dengeli ve düzenli beslenme ile fiziksel aktiviteye ilişkin ebeveyn ve öğrencilere eğitim ve danışmanlık verilmesi, okullarda okul sağlığı hemşiresinin istihdamının sağlanması önerilmektedir. Background and Aim: Childhood obesity, of which the prevalence is getting increased and will continue throughout next years, is a problem significantly affecting morbidity and mortality. Early detection of the problem is crucial in terms of taking precautions. This research was conducted to determine the obesity prevalence and risk factors that affect obesity in secondary school students, as descriptive. Method: Total 500 students at 5., 6. and 7. classes of 18 secondary schools and their parents were constituted of the sample of the research in Kırşehir province. Ethical approval, institutional permission, parent and student consents were obtained. Data were collected with a Questionnaire Form. After performing the Questionnaire Form, body weight, height, waist circumference were measured and Body Mass Index was calculated. Data were analysed with descriptive statistics, Kappa and Chi-Square tests by IBM SPSS Statistics 15.0 (IBM SPSS Inc, Chicago, ILL, USA) package program. Findings: Of the students, 14.4% were obese, 11.6% were overweight, and 35.2% had abdominal obesity. Obesity was higher in girls who never had breastmilk but the difference between groups wasn't significant (p>0.05). There was a compliance from moderate to good level between the responses of students and their parents related to nutritional behaviours, duration spent in front of the screen and exercising (p<0.01). A higher obesity rate was found in the students who had obese mother and father, skipped meals frequently, ate 1-2 meals a day, did not eat lunch and were not satisfied with body weight (p<0.05). Conclusion and Recommendations: According to these findings, it is suggested that body weight and height should be regularly monitored, education and consultation about adequate and balanced nutrition and physical activity should be given to the students and parents, and school nurses should be employed at schools for early diagnosis and prevention of obesity.
