19. yüzyılda Süveyş kanalının açılmasıyla dünya ticaret yolları yön
değiştirmiştir. Bu dönemde sanayileşme rekabeti içerisinde olan Avrupalı
devletlerin ilgisi de Doğu Afrika üzerine çevrilmiştir. Özellikle Süveyş
Kanalını kontrol eden Mısır ile transit ticarette uğrak yeri olan Kızıldeniz
liman şehirleri önem kazanmıştır. Bu bağlamda İngiltere Uzakdoğu’daki
kolonileri için önemli bir konumda bulunan Mısır’ı işgal etmiştir. Bunun
ardından İngiltere, Sudan’a doğru genişleme siyaseti izlemeye başlamıştır.
İngiltere’nin Sudan’ı işgali iki aşamada gerçekleşmiştir. İlk aşama, 1882-
1885 tarihlerinde William Hicks ve General Gordon Sudan’a
gönderilmiş, ancak Sudan’da patlak veren Mehdi Hareketi nedeniyle
başarılı olunamamıştır. İkinci aşama ise 1896-1898 tarihlerinde Sudan’da
bir Mehdi Devleti olduğu halde General Herbert Kitchener’in komutası
altında gerçekleşen işgal girişimidir. 1896’da İngiltere’nin isteği
doğrultusunda İngiliz General Kitchener’in komutası altında Sudan’a
doğru Mısır-İngiliz müttefik ordularının ileri harekâtı görülmüştür.
Sudan’ın işgali iklim şartlarının olumsuz etkisi, coğrafi şartların elverişli
olmaması, ikmal faaliyetlerindeki eksiklik ve İngiliz-Mısır ordularındaki
uyumsuzluk nedeniyle yaklaşık 3 yıl kadar bir süreyi almıştır. Bu süre
zarfında Halife Abdullah’a bağlı birliklerle İngiliz-Mısır güçleri arasında
büyük savaşların haricinde sayısız çarpışmalar gerçekleşmiştir. Buna
rağmen İngiliz-Mısır güçlerinin ileri harekâtı mümkün olabilmiştir.
Sudan’ın kaderini değiştiren gelişme Atbara Savaşı’nda İngiliz-Mısır
güçlerine karşı Halife Abdullah’ın aldığı yenilgi olmuştur. Bu savaşın
ardından İngiliz-Mısır güçleri Omdurman önlerine kadar ilerleme imkânı
elde etmişlerdir. Omdurman Savaşı’nda Halife Abdullah’ın yenilgisiyle
Sudan’daki İngiliz hâkimiyeti kesin olarak gerçekleşmiş böylece Mehdi
Devleti tarihe karışmıştır. Ocak 1899’da “Condominium Antlaşması”
yapılarak İngiliz-Mısır ortak idaresi kurulmuştur. Sonraki dönemlerde Mısırlı yetkililer devre dışı kalmış, İngiltere bölgenin yönetiminde söz
sahibi olmuştur.
Günümüzde Ortadoğu ve Afrika üzerindeki batı politikasının daha
iyi anlaşılabilmesi 19. ve 20. yüzyıl siyasi ve askeri faaliyetlerinin oldukça
iyi bilinmesine bağlıdır. Bu çalışmada Sudan özelinde İngiltere’nin Doğu
Afrika üzerindeki emperyal faaliyetleriyle Sudan’ın işgal edilmesinin
arkasındaki politik nedenler ifade edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Nitekim bu
çalışma Ortadoğu ve Afrika üzerinde oldukça sınırlı olan akademik
çalışmalara katkıda bulunmak amacıyla hazırlanmıştır.

the opening of the Suez Canal. In this period, the interest of European
states, which was in competition for industrialization, has been turned
over to East Africa. Especially, the Egyptian controlling the Suez Canal
and Red Sea port cities, which were arrived by transit trade, gained
importance. In this respect, Britain occupied Egypt, which is in an
important position for colonies in the Far East. Then, Britain began to
pursue enlargement policy towards Sudan. The occupation of the Sudan
by the United Kingdom took place in two stages. In the first stage,
between 1882 and 1885, William Hicks and General Gordon were sent
to Sudan, but failed because of the Mahdi Movement that broke out in
Sudan. In the second stage, between 1896 and 1898, it is the occupation
attempt under the command of General Herbert Kitchener in spite of
Mahdi State in Sudan. In 1896, the UK wanted that Egyptian-British
allied armies under the command of British General Kitchener must
march towards Sudan. Sudan's occupation took about 3 years due to the
adverse effects of climate conditions, the inadequate geographical
conditions, the lack of replenishment activities and the incompatibility
between the British and Egyptian armed forces. During this time, there
had been numerous clashes between the British and Egyptian forces,
except for the great battles between the troops affiliated to Caliph
Abdullah. However, the Anglo-Egyptian forces were able to move
forward. The development that changed the fate of Sudan was the defeat
of the Caliph Abdullah against the Anglo-Egyptian forces in the Atbara
War. After this war, the Anglo-Egyptian forces had the opportunity to
advance to the front of Omdurman. The British domination in Sudan
was realized with the defeat of Caliph Abdullah in the Battle of
Omdurman. And so the Mahdi State was destroyed. In January 1899, the
Anglo-Egyptian joint administration was established at the conclusion of
the “Condominium Agreement”. In the following periods, the Egyptian
authorities were disengaged, and Britain itself ruled the region.
