Mesleki yabancı dil (İngilizce) dersine yönelik nitel bir araştırma

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, önlisans turizm programlarında mesleki yabancı dil derslerini almış ve henüz almamış öğrencilerle, bu dersi veren İngilizce okutmanlarının mesleki yabancı dil dersine yönelik görüşlerinin karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmesidir. Bu araştırmada; nitel yöntem, durum çalışması deseni, görüşme tekniği ve kolay ulaşılabilir durum örneklemesi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmaya Turizm ve Otel İşletmeciliği ile Turizm ve Seyahat Hizmetleri programlarında mesleki yabancı dil derslerini almış olan 58 öğrenci, bu dersi alacak olan 39 öğrenci ve bu dersi ön lisans düzeyinde daha önce vermiş olan 7 İngilizce okutmanı katılmıştır. Araştırmada veriler, standartlaştırılmış açık uçlu görüşme formu ile elde edilmiş, betimsel olarak analiz edilmiş ve araştırma bulguları karşılaştırmalı olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırma sonunda, tüm katılımcıların ders içeriğinin mesleki hayatta kullanılacak şekilde, diyalog ve konuşmalara öncelik verilerek, kelime dağarcığını geliştirecek şekilde, canlandırmaların yer aldığı, öğrenci ilgi ve seviyesine uygun materyallerin kullanıldığı ve az da olsa dilbilgisi konularına yer verecek şekilde düzenlenmesi gerektiğini düşündükleri görülmüştür. Mesleki yabancı dil dersinde yer verilmesi gereken konulara ilişkin, tüm katılımcıların ortak görüşleri arasında, günlük konuşma, ön büro/resepsiyon diyalogları, otele giriş çıkış işlemleri ile ilgili diyaloglar, rezervasyon diyalogları, telefon konuşmaları, turizm, otel ve seyahat ile ilgili mesleki konular, müşteri ile iletişim, yiyecek-içecek servisinde garson ve müşteri arasında geçebilecek diyaloglar, kat hizmetleri ile ilgili kelimeleri içeren okuma parçaları ve kat hizmetleri diyalogları yer almaktadır.

The purpose of the study is to examine comparatively opinions of students who have taken vocational foreign language course, students who have not taken the course yet and the instructors of English who have taught the course at tourism programs at associate degree. Qualitative research method, case study, interview technique and convenient sampling technique were used in the research. The study was carried out with students studying at Tourism and Hotel Management and Tourism and Travel Services, and the instructors of English who have taught vocational foreign language course at the two departments. 58 students who have taken the course and 39 students who have not taken the course yet and 7 instructors of English participated in the study voluntarily. Standardized open-ended interview form was used to collect data and the data were analyzed descriptively. The results were discussed comparatively. The findings of the study show that both students and the instructors think similarly about the content of the course in that the course should include subjects to be used in professional life, prioritize dialogues and conversations, develop vocabulary, contain role-play activities, use materials appropriate for students’ language levels and include grammatical rules. Other findings of the study include that both the instructors and students think that the course should involve daily dialogues, dialogues at front office/reception desk, dialogues about check-in and check-out of the hotel, booking a hotel room or a ticket, talking on the phone, units of tourism in general and hotel and travel in particular, communication with the guests, dialogues at food and beverages service, dialogues and reading passages about housekeeping.
