Covıd-19 ve altın talebi

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, COVID-19 pandemisinin küresel altın talebi üzerindeki etkisinin analiz edilmesidir. Bu amaç doğrultusunda 2010:Q1-2022:Q3 dönemine ait çeyreklik veriler kullanılarak oluşturulan ekonometrik model, FMOLS ve DOLS teknikleriyle tahmin edilmiştir. Analiz sonuçları altın talebinin COVID-19 başlangıç döneminde diğer dönemlere kıyasla %16-24 bandında azaldığını; kanıksama döneminde ise diğer dönemlere kıyasla %11 oranında arttığını göstermektedir. Bu bulgular, pandeminin başlangıç döneminde altının güvenli liman olarak görülmediğini ancak ilerleyen dönemlerde tekrar güvenli liman olma özelliği kazandığına vurgu yapmaktadır. Buna göre pandeminin küresel altın talebi üzerindeki etkisi pandeminin ciddiyetine göre değişkenlik göstermektedir.

This study aims to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global gold demand. To this end, an econometric model depending on quarterly data ranging from 2010:Q1 to 2022:Q3 is estimated using FMOLS and DOLS techniques. The analysis results show that gold demand decreased by 16-24% in the initial period of COVID-19 compared to other periods but it increased by 11% in the normalization period compared to other periods. These findings emphasize that gold is not seen as a safe haven in the initial period of the pandemic but regained its safe haven feature later on. Therefore, the impact of the pandemic on global gold demand varies by the severity of the pandemic.
