The concept of heaven in drawings by french muslim children
Güleç, Yasemin
This study examined drawings of children’s concepts of paradise categorized by age, gender,
and religious-cultural differences. Participants were Sunni Turkish Muslim children
born in France and who attend Islamic religious education at France’s Strasbourg Yunus
Emre Mosque on weekends. Three superordinate and 14 subordinate qualitative categories
were formed from the children’s drawings analyzed by the phenomenographic method.
Although concrete descriptions of heaven were seen in the drawings by children of all ages,
abstract depictions increased with age. Whereas drawings of heaven by girls depicted love
and compassion, boys’ drawings represented power. Although there are commonalities
between the descriptions by children of Muslim background and children from other religious
backgrounds and cultures, the children’s particular religious and cultural structures
were reflected in their representations of paradise. Recommendations from this study are
given for the nature of the education children receive regarding death and heaven and hell.

Depictions of God in the drawings of German-Muslim children
Güleç, Yasemin
This empirical inquiry aimed to examine the qualitative differences of the ‘God’
concept of Turkish-German Sunni Muslim children living in Germany. In this study,
non-anthropomorphic drawings did not increase gradually with age. Anthromoporphic
God depictions seem to be ontologically moving away from people with age. In the
present study, indirect God depictions occurred six times more than the direct God
depictions. ‘Religious-cultural drawings’ were the most common in the sample. The
girls drew more aesthetic drawings that expressed an emotional bond with God. Boys
depicted God more rationally and pragmatically in regard to human life and the world.

Dâvûd Karsî’nin el-Îsâgûcî el-Cedîd ’i
Özkan, Abdussamet
Bu makalenin [amacı], Osmanlı âlimlerinden Dâvûd Karsî’ye (ö. 1756 [?]) ait el-Îsâgûcî el-Cedîd’in t kikli neşrini ortaya koymaktır. The present article presents an edition of al-Īsāghūjī al-Jadīd by the Ottoman scholar Dāwūd Qar~ī (d. ca. 1756). The edition is prefaced with an introduction that gives the wider context of the work, a biographical overview of its author and a survey of the contents, and a comparison with the older Īsāghūjī of al-Abharī (d. 663/1265). Qar~ī’s work, around twice as long as Abharī’s original, is indicative of some of the major discussions that had taken place in the Arabic tradition of logic since the 13th century. The work is also noteworthy for the author’s emphasis on his work being a “new” (jadīd) version of an older handbook, indicating the positive valence given to the term jadīd by an Ottoman madrasa scholar in the mid-18th century.

Genel olarak bu mesele, Tûsî’nin İbn Sînâ felsefesine ya da Şiî kelâmına bağlılığını test etmekte ve hatta onu bazı eserlerinde İbn Sînâ’nın bilgi görüşüne karşı bir duruş sergilemeye zorlamaktadır.; Avicenna was one of the premodern philosophers who argued for the Principle of Sufficient Reason (PSR), namely the claim that everything has a cause and that no uncaused beings can exist. One of the consequences of PSR is necessitarianism, which is the assertion that whatever exists actually also exists necessarily because each and every member of the causal chain is determined by antecedent causes. PSR thus goes against human intuition that suggests that things could have been otherwise. My goal is to investigate whether post-Avicennian authors tried to mitigate the necessitarian consequences of PSR by excluding human will from it. I will concentrate on the comparison between Na~īr al-Dīn al-Tūsī’s (d. 1274) Persian treatise Jabr va qadar and his theological summa Tajrīd al-i‘tiqād. The immediate reason for choosing this issue is al-Tūsī’s assertions that humans intuitively know they are autonomous agents of their actions, which seems to contradict the universal applicability of PSR. I will argue al-Tūsī to have espoused somewhat different views on free will, depending on the character of the texts and the period in which they were written, sometimes being consistent with Avicenna while other times engaging with Mu‘tazilism. I will show how al-Tūsī, however causally ineffective at times, left room for human freedom, which he understood as a different kind of determination that is able to act independently of the other types of determination to which humans are subject, be they physical or divine. Overall, the discussion tests al-Tūsī’s allegiance to either Avicennian philosophy or Shi‘i theology and even forces him to take a stance against Avicenna’s view on knowledge in some of his works.
