Pre-critical kant on traditional logic: What is the mistake in syllogistic theory?
Besler, Arman
Immanuel Kant held nearly two decades before (1762) the beginning of his ‘Critical period’ (1781) that the traditional tripartite/quadripartite division of the figures in categorical syllogistic remained a ‘mistaken subtlety’ (falsche Spitzfindigkeit), given (i) that the Aristotelian perfect moods were the only ‘pure’ patterns of reasoning that exemplify the term order – called the first figure – prescribed by the general rule of ratiocination per se, and (ii) that every imperfect mood in the same theory could be ‘reduced’ to one of those four. There really are sheer logical problems, already noted in the literature, in Kant’s reading of the standard reductive scheme for categorical syllogistic as a set of instructions for restoring the first figure within the premises of a given imperfect mood. However, the real issue is the way Kant benefits from these points to justify his ‘mistaken subtlety thesis’ (MST), which translates in turn into the issue of the correct interpretation of the thesis itself. This paper aims to show that, contrary to appearance, MST might fail to make any definite sense; to that end, it first presents and evaluates Kant’s own special conception of judgment and reasoning that centers around the notion of syllogistic mediation, on which basis Kant states MST; then it shows that a tenable reading of MST answering to the Kantian conception and to common facts about inference and deduction cannot be made. The paper concludes by proposing to connect this negative result to Kant’s wavering between descriptive and prescriptive perspectives on purely logical matters.

Âşık Paşa’nın Garib-nâme’sinde vücut şehrinin yöneticisi olarak akıl
Manav, Faruk
Böylece insanın vücut şehrinde yer alan kapıların varlık, bilgi ve değerler açısından ne anlam ifade ettiği ve aklın bu konudaki işlevi gün yüzüne çıkarılacaktır.; Âşık Pasha states in Garib-nâme that the ruler of the human body, which is like a city, is the
mind. According to him, there are eight doors in this city and he says that these doors can serve
their ideal functions by means of reason. Reason is the ability that enables every door to fulfill its
ideal function and that can establish order in human beings. This study aims to give a
philosophical evaluation of the relevant part of Garib-nâme where the human body is likened to a
city with reason as its ruler, and to unveil the provenances of this thought. This will be done with
the aid of some analogous thoughts on the same subject from both universal and Turkish
philosophical literature. It will thus be brought to light what these doors in the human’s “city of
body” are to mean from the perspective of being, knowledge and values, and what function is to
be served by reason in this setting.

Bu bağlamda sözü edilen çalışma Spinoza’nın Schelling’in düşünsel yolculuğuna nasıl eşlik ettiğini anlamak açısından analiz edilmeye değerdir.; Spinoza is one of the philosophers who had tremendous effects on the German
philosophical tradition and especially on German Idealism. Spinoza was subjected to a new
reading by German idealists. As a result of these readings a new image of Spinoza emerged. Among
them, Schelling's reading of Spinoza undoubtedly has a special importance. Spinoza plays a
decisive role in most of Schelling's philosophy, both in terms of identifying and solving problems,
and the method and language used. Schelling never gave up on Spinoza’s way until his later
philosophy. Although Schelling expressed his sympathy for Spinoza, he does not also hesitate to
criticize the main elements of his system. Schelling's way of reading Spinoza offer an alternative
to how Spinoza should be understood, it also plays an important role in shaping Schelling's own
philosophy. Spinoza's influence on Schelling differs in each period and in each of his works. For
example, considering that his basic problem is roughly the principle of philosophy in his early
works, it is seen that this problem determines his interaction with Spinoza. Schelling's approach
to this problem through Spinoza gradually deepens in his work called “Of the I as the Principle of
Philosophy or on the Unconditional in Human Knowledge”. In this context, the mentioned study is
worth analyzing in terms of understanding how Spinoza accompanies Schelling's intellectual
journey.
